As a wedding photographer, engagement sessions hold a special place in my heart- That’s why I include these sessions in each of my Wedding packages. They allow me to get a peek into your relationship and help me better prepare for perfectly capturing your big day!
Not only will you leave with gorgeous photos to use on your save the dates, post on your socials, and hang in your home- you’ll leave with a fun memory of the two of you celebrating this exciting new chapter of your lives.
If the thought of having professional photos taken makes you a little nervous, no need to worry! A little planning and preparation really help ease the nerves with these shoots. I put together this guide so you know exactly how to prepare for your engagement photos.
Choosing a location for your engagement session is a great place to start in the planning process. Think of a place that is special to the two of you, like the street you met on, or your favorite nature spot. Make sure to let your photographer know ahead of time, so they can secure any required permits to shoot there if necessary.
If you don’t have anywhere particular in mind, ask your photographer for recommendations. I have a list of local areas I love shooting at, and I’m always happy to help my clients decide on what location suits them best.
“What should I wear?!” is one of the top questions I get from clients when booking an engagement session. The answer is pretty simple. Wear something you feel super confident, yet comfortable in. Don’t be afraid to dress up, but make sure it still feels like you.
Try your best to avoid loud patterns and colors. Neutral, lighter tones photograph really well and won’t take the focus away from the two of you. No need to go buy matching sweaters, just make sure your outfits complement each other. Unless matching is your thing, then go all out!
I always advise picking two outfit options- one casual, and one on the dressier side. Wearing layers and accessories you can take on and off makes it easier to switch up the looks between shots!
Your engagement photos are all about the love you and your partner share, so why not turn it into a full day of romance? Enjoy some time together doing something you love before you get to your shoot. Go grab a bite at your favorite brunch spot, or arrive early and take a stroll together outside. Doing this will help alleviate any pre-shoot jitters, and really helps set the mood for your shoot.
All dressed up, and nowhere to go? Might as well go grab drinks or hit the town when your shoot is over. This is a major call for celebration, after all!
As long as you show up ready to let loose and have some fun, you don’t need to overthink your engagement photos. I always have a list of poses and prompts for my couples, so they never have to worry about looking awkward. Just do your best to come with an open mind, and the rest will flow naturally!
