Perhaps you’ve been pondering an at-home shoot after scrolling through cozy couples photos on Pinterest, or maybe you’ve never even considered getting professional photos of and your honey. Wherever you may stand with the subject, I’m here to tell you to book a romantic at-home shoot like- right now.
Here’s why:
Most couples aren’t full-time models, so being photographed can be a bit nerve-racking. As a photographer, I pride myself in making my clients feel at ease during our shoots- and I will do anything to help them loosen up and feel comfortable in their skin (like seriously- I will chug a beer with you and make dad jokes the entire session if that helps). However; there’s something to be said for the confidence that seems to flow so effortlessly for my couples that are being photographed in the space they’re most familiar with -their own home.
At-home sessions are a romantic addition to “traditional” engagement photos, but also make for a fun and unique date night idea. I encourage my couples to have fun and pretend I’m not even there (it’s easier than it sounds- I promise). Turn on some of your favorite tunes and dance together in the kitchen. Play your favorite board game on the living room floor. Drink your favorite glass of vino on the deck. Get cozy and cuddle up together in bed. Think of what you’d do together on a rainy Sunday afternoon if it was just the two of you.
The goal is to make it feel as real and authentic as possible. That is the trick to capturing these beautifully intimate moments that display the raw connection between two people that are (clearly) madly in love.
Now that I have you convinced, here are some tips to prepare you for your at-home photoshoot:
When deciding where in your home the photos should take place, choose an area that is well-decorated, but not distracting. I always remind my clients to remove the clutter, but not the personality. I like to add cozy textiles and light a few candles to set the “mood”.
Put on some casual and comfortable clothes. I recommend the look of slightly worn threads over something brand new for these types of photos. Find something you both love, but make sure that your outfits are not clashing with each other- or your home decor. You don’t have to be matchy-matchy, but the styles and colors should flow together.
Your photos will feel the most genuine when you’re able to do what you do best- be yourselves. Don’t be afraid to move around your space, get silly, and have fun with each other. Your photos should feel like a peek into your regular lives and relationship- rather than a series of staged poses.
